The long way home

About The long way home

In The Long Way Home, you find yourself stranded far from Earth with only a limited fuel supply and the air in your lungs to keep you alive. Maneuver carefully through space, using gravity from planets to conserve your precious fuel since every burn reduces your chances of making it home. The game challenges you to plot indirect routes that take advantage of gravitational swings rather than straight-line thrust.

As you navigate the void, you will encounter abandoned supply stations offering critical refueling opportunities and sealed containers that can be accessed if you’re willing to wait. Hazards like debris fields require cautious movement, forcing you to slow down to avoid damage. Your chest-mounted assistant, VESTA, provides guidance on your trajectory and warns you when corrections are needed.

Survival depends on balancing navigation with resource management, using limited thrust, an electric ion drive, and your environmental scanner effectively. The objective is to make it back to Earth before your oxygen runs out, with the option to undertake additional trips carrying cargo once you master the basics.

The game emphasizes realistic space physics with an emphasis on drift versus thrust, where fuel economy is vital, and quick reflexes only get you so far. Controls adapt to mouse, keyboard, or touchscreen input, allowing you to drag to aim, ignite thrusters, scan surroundings, repair your suit, and plan routes on a tactical map.

The Long Way Home offers a thoughtful space survival experience that challenges players to think strategically about movement in zero gravity while managing scarce resources across a hostile solar environment.

How to Play

Everything is also an on-screen button, so it plays with a mouse, a keyboard or a touchscreen. DRAG anywhere to look around and aim. ENGINE or SPACE burns the main thruster — short taps, fuel is finite. STOP or X flips you around and burns retrograde; it is the only way to slow down out here. DRIFT or Z lays you flat along your heading, which streamlines you and lets you sidestep rock. ION DRIVE or V is a weak electric thrust that runs on battery instead of fuel. SCAN or F lights up nearby supplies and charts debris fields onto your map. REPAIR or T patches the suit. TAB, or a tap on the small map, opens the planning map — pick a destination there and your scanner becomes a compass. The AIM ONLY / HOLD = THRUST switch changes whether dragging also fires the engine.
