About Mini Chess

Mini Chess offers a distinctive take on the classic game by featuring 25 chess variants played on smaller boards ranging from 4x4 to 6x6 squares. Each variant introduces unique starting positions and rules, providing quick but challenging tactical puzzles suited for brief play sessions. You'll begin as White, moving first, and your goal is to capture or checkmate the opposing king on these compact boards.

The game includes well-known variations like Gardner and Los Alamos Chess as well as original layouts, each with an accompanying note explaining its background. Rules can vary between boards—for example, pawn movement and draw conditions—so a handy in-game rules card keeps these details clear. There’s no castling or en passant in any variant, but pawn promotion remains an essential strategic element.

Mini Chess challenges players to defeat the AI opponent at each board’s difficulty levels, unlocking new configurations and earning stars for clearing harder settings. Features like the Undo option allow you to rethink moves, with a limited number of redos available before a brief ad is needed for an extra chance.

This game blends the intellectual depth of chess with accessible, fast-paced gameplay. It suits players looking for a thought-provoking single-player experience involving logic and strategy on a smaller scale than traditional chess. Whether you are exploring historical variants or testing your skills against the AI, Mini Chess encourages careful planning and quick decision-making without overwhelming complexity.

How to Play

You play White and always move first. Tap a piece to see its legal moves, then tap a highlighted square to move. Capture the enemy king or checkmate it to win.

Each board has its own layout — check the Rules button to see whether pawns may double-step and what counts as a draw. Pawns promote when they reach the last rank; there is no castling or en passant.

Win once on a board to unlock the next one in its group, and clear a higher difficulty on the same board to earn more stars. Use Undo to take back your last move; when you run out, watch a short ad for one more.
